What does Plant-Based mean?

From the Harvard Health Blog, plant-based or plant-forward eating patterns focus on foods primarily from plants. This includes not only fruits and vegetables, but also nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, legumes, and beans. It doesn't mean that you are vegetarian or vegan and never eat meat or dairy. Rather, you are proportionately choosing more of your foods from plant sources.

Vegetarian diets come in lots of shapes and sizes, and you should choose the version that works best for you.

  • Semi-vegetarian or flexitarian includes eggs, dairy foods, and occasionally meat, poultry, fish, and seafood.

  • Pescatarian includes eggs, dairy foods, fish, and seafood, but no meat or poultry.

  • Vegetarian (sometimes referred to as lacto-ovo vegetarian) includes eggs and dairy foods, but no meat, poultry, fish, or seafood.

  • Vegan includes no animal foods.

Health Benefits:

Much nutrition research has examined plant-based eating patterns such as the Mediterranean diet and a vegetarian diet. The Mediterranean diet has a foundation of plant-based foods; it also includes fish, poultry, eggs, cheese, and yogurt a few times a week, with meats and sweets less often.

The Mediterranean diet has been shown in both large population studies and randomized clinical trials to reduce risk of heart disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, certain cancers, depression, and in older adults, a decreased risk of frailty, along with better mental and physical function.

Vegetarian diets have also been shown to support health, including a lower risk of developing coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and increased longevity.

More sustainable for the planet:

According to a report by the U.S. Food and Agriculture Organization, “The meat industry has a marked impact on a general global scale on water, soils, extinction of plants and animals, and consumption of natural resources, and it has a strong impact on global warming.”

The meat and dairy industries alone use one third of the Earth’s fresh water, with a single quarter-pound hamburger patty requiring 460 gallons of water — the equivalent of almost 30 showers — to produce.

Eating a more plant-based diet:

  • Produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Needs less energy for food production.

  • Has a smaller environmental footprint compared to diets that include meat.

Benefits Of A Plant-Based Diet: Healthy People and Healthy Planet

Prevents Animal Cruelty:

Ninety-four percent of Americans agree that animals raised for food deserve to be free from abuse and cruelty, yet 99% of those animals are raised in factory farms, many suffering unspeakable conditions.

If you would like to lessen your meat and dairy consumption due to animal welfare concerns but aren’t ready to eliminate all animal products from your diet, then you can start by taking small steps.
